Absentee ballots set for Nov. 5

Escambia County (Ala.) Circuit Clerk John Robert Fountain said Tuesday he has sent out 120 absentee voter applications for the Nov. 5 General Election and said he has received five ballots back.

The last day to apply for an absentee ballot is 4 p.m. on Oct. 31 and Fountain said nobody can receive a ballot without applying first. Fountain also said it's important for voters to update their addresses with the board of registrars before applying for an absentee ballot.

Fountain added that Escambia County will have 10 different ballot styles in the General Election, and voters will receive different ballots depending on which voting district people live in.

When contacted Tuesday, the judge of probate office said it had not received any sample ballots, which should be coming from the secretary of state's office.

Absentee ballot applications can be picked up at the circuit clerk's office inside the courthouse in Brewton and are also available at http://www.sos.state.al.us.

Fountain noted that nobody is allowed to bring in an application for another person and only one application request is allowed in a single envelope.

The applicant must also provide an Escambia County, Ala., proof of residence and physical address, not a post office box, even if the application will be mailed to the post office box.

Fountain also noted that nobody can receive or return an absentee ballot except the person voting.

Once a voter receives the application, Fountain said it's important to read the guidelines that say a photo identification must be included when the ballot is returned.

Ballots must be returned to the circuit clerk's office no later than 4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 4. If the ballot is mailed to the clerk's office at P.O. Box 856, Brewton, Ala., 36427, it must be postmarked no later than Nov. 4
