Area rallying around Ken Lett

T.R. Miller player suffers broken neck, prayers and fund raising continues

The community is rallying around T.R. Miller football player Ken Lett, Jr., who suffered a broken neck on the opening kickoff Friday night as the Tigers took on UMS in Mobile.

Both teams huddled around Lett in prayer before he was loaded into an ambulance and transported to USA Medical Center in Mobile where he underwent surgery.

T.R. Miller Principal Chuck Alford was headed to Mobile Wednesday afternoon to visit with Alford and said there has been slow progress in Lett's injury.

"Coach Hubbert told me he is making real hopeful progress which is a good sign," Alford said.

Lee Jernigan, pastor at Alco Baptist Church, put together a last minute prayer and fundraising event Sunday afternoon at Market Place Park in Brewton, where a huge crowd showed up, prayed and raised more than $9,000 for the Lett family.

T.R. Miller is currently selling T-shirts that read B21IEVE/STRONG to raise more money. Alford said a donor has donated the T-Shirts and they will be sold for $20 each will all proceeds going to the Lett family. Pre orders can be at the high school's main office or at Weaver's Apparel & Fine Jewelry or by submitting payment to the T.R. Miller Athletic Club through Venmo@TRMiller-Athletic Club.

T.R. Miller will also be selling smoked chicken plates from 1 to 3 p.m. on Oct. 13. The plates come with smoked leg quarters, cole slaw and baked beans for $10 and can be picked up at the T.R. Miller High School cafeteria with all proceeds going to the Lett family.

More fundraising events to help the Lett family will be coming that can be followed on T.R. Miller High School's Facebook page, the Brewton Standard and the Tri-City Ledger.

"Thank you!" Alco Baptist Church posted on its Facebook page Monday. "I just wanted to take a moment and just say thank you to the Brewton/East Brewton community for the outreached helping hand that was extended to the Lett family last night. The attendance was amazing and the offerings totaled over $9,000 in gifts and monetary donations. This act of love far exceeded anything that was expected, but with God miracles shouldn't surprise us. Thanks again to you all."
