Myers is making Homewood mark

Grandson of Dewey and Irene Bondurant leading Patriots to 6A football playoff birth

Although Dewey and Irene Bondurant still bleed Hurricane green, this season their attention has been focused in Homewood as they watch their grandson Will Myers lead the team as the returning starting quarterback for the Patriots' in Class 6A, Region 5.

The daughter of Claire and Scott Myers, Will has followed up a stellar junior season with big numbers that are catching the eyes of college scouts.

As a junior Will hit on 111 of 158 passes for 1,424 yards and 10 touchdowns and added another 12 touchdowns on the ground.

Through eight games this year Will has connected on 74 of 118 passes for 1,187 yards and 11 touchdowns through the air. He has also rushed 84 times for 502 yards and 12 touchdowns.

This past Friday, Homewood fell to Parker 27-17 that secured Parker's spot as the Region 5 top spot heading into the playoffs. Homewood, 6-2 overall and 4-1 in region play will play region foe Minor tonight (Thursday) with the winner securing the runner-up spot in the region and the loser finishing third with both headed to the playoffs.

A double special for Dewey and Irene Bondurant is Will's younger brother Jack, a sophomore, is one of Will's backups at quarterback. The Bondurants recently attended a game where Will scored on runs of 45 yards and 55 yards and completed a touchdown pass of 75 yards. It got more special when Jack entered the game toward the end.

Bondurant said the Air Force Academy has recruited Will hard and he has other offers from smaller schools to continue his football career in college but said he hasn't made up his mind.

Bondurant said while Will has excelled on the football field he's most proud of his leadership ability and his focus on his team, his family and his community.

Will graced the front cover of Birmingham's 2024 Metro Football guide with high goals for Homewood this season.

Last season the Patriots opened the season 0-3 for the first time in school history but went on a five-game winning streak that put Homewood in the playoffs.

"We really had to come together as a group and go on that five-game winning streak," Will is quoted as saying in the magazine. "I'm fortunate to be able to play the role that I do on our team, but it's a lot easier when you have the guys around you that are helping you out every step of the way and knowing they all have my back."

Will added that while accolades matter to a lot of people but for him the thing that matters the most is winning the football game.

"Our community means everything to me," Will said. "Seeing the little kids on Friday nights, I remember that used to be me. Every time I see them, I try to make the impact that the older guys did when I was younger and I just try to be that leader for them that they look up to."

He said he tries to be the same leader for the younger guys as the guys who led him and focuses on leading them on and off the field.

"I care about our senior class leaving a legacy of 'The Homewood Way'," he said. "That's being better off the field than on the field and being leaders in the community and helping our community and always being there for the people around us. I care about wins, but more than that, I care about the people that are in our school and the people that are in our community."

Homewood will wrap up the regular season by hosting James Clemens in a non-region game before heading to the playoffs.
