Flomaton to spend grant $ on lagoon

Moye says total cost less than $1.1 million

During a special meeting last Wednesday, the Flomaton Town Council approved a resolution to award the low bid of $1,219,575 from L&K Contracting Co., Inc., of Dothan to make repairs and upgrades to the town’s sewer lagoon while Utilities Superintendent Shaun Moye said he feels he can negotiate the bid below the $1.1 million grant amount.

Flomaton received the $1.1 million grant through the Alabama Department of Environmental Management through the state’s Clean Water Revolving Fund.

Moye noted the town would be responsible for 20 percent of the grant amount, which will come to the town as a low-interest loan payable over 20 years.

Moye told the council he has already negotiated the contract lower than the original bid and hopes to get the final amount even lower.

Town vehicles

The council also approved seeking a $50,000 grant for a new patrol car with the police package for the police department, that would leave the town owing about $18,000.

The council also agreed to spend $30,000 to purchase a used pickup truck from the Escambia County Sheriff’s office for Police Chief Dereck Lowry vs. spending more than $60,000 for a new vehicle. It was noted the pickup truck is a non-pursuit vehicle.

The council also agreed to seek a $50,000 grant to replace an old truck in the utilities department with a new truck. Moye said the department will be getting rid of a 21-year old truck.

Senior Center

The Flomaton Community Center, located on McCurdy Street and houses the senior citizen center, will be closed Nov. 11 and 12 to replace flooring and make improvements in the bathrooms and kitchen.

The town received a $5,500 grant from the Resource Conservation and Development Council for the improvements.
