Republicans follow national trend in electing GOP nominees to all seats unseating one Dem.
Escambia County (Ala.) followed the red wave across the nation in putting its support behind Donald Trump and every other Republican on Tuesday's ballot that led to Democrat incumbent District 2 school board member Danny Benjamin being defeated by Republican challenger Greg Dawkins.
"I've enjoyed all my 36 years on the school board," Benjamin said Tuesday night inside the Escambia County Courthouse. "I wish nothing but the best for our schools and I wish Mr. Dawkins all the best."
Benjamin leaves the board as the longest-serving school board member in the state of Alabama.
Dawkins, along with Jerry Wilson, who defeated Mike Edwards in the Republican Primary for the District 3 seat, ran without opposition Tuesday, will be sworn in at the school board's meeting Nov. 15 at 2:30 p.m. at the central office in Brewton.
Tuesday's results in Escambia County showed 52.99 percent of the registered voters cast ballots with Trump receiving 10,866 votes (72.78 percent) to Kamala Harris' 3,188 votes (28.86 percent). Trump also carried Alabama with 64.57 percent of the vote over Harris and has been elected nationwide as the next president of the United States.
