$1.5 million bond set for trafficking

Atmore jails two for meth and Fentanyl

Two Pensacola residents are each being held on $1.5 million bond following a traffic stop in Atmore that led to both being charged multiple charges including trafficking drugs.

Clifford Alan Lewis, 59, 5705 Wickford Lane, and Lee Ann Mathis, 35, 6160 West Nine Mile Road, were both charged with a felony count of trafficking drugs, unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Lewis was also charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

According to reports filed by the Atmore Police Department, about 11:25 p.m. on Dec. 12 a police officer initiated a traffic stop on Highway 21 after observing the vehicle swerving.

Lewis was identified as the driver and Mathis was a front seat passenger. The officer reported Lewis appeared to be under the influence and then failed a field sobriety test.

Police reported while checking Mathis’ identification the officer discovered she had several outstanding misdemeanor warrants for her arrest filed by the Atmore Police Department.

The K-9 officer was dispatched to the scene and alerted on the vehicle. A subsequent search revealed 4.8 grams of Fentanyl, 10.7 grams of methamphetamine and paraphernalia that included a digital scale, plastic baggies and a syringe with a needle.

Both were arrested and transported to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton. At a Dec. 13 bond hearing, District Judge Eric Coale set bonds of $1.5 million on both suspects.
