The Town of Century approved unanimously to hire Jennifer Tien from Michigan as its town clerk Tuesday night at a salary of $86,000 and three weeks vacation, a week more than the standard two weeks a new employee receives.
Tien requested three weeks vacation per year during negotiations, although the town’s 1993 employee handbook policy allows for three weeks of vacation after five years of service. Tien said she was currently receiving five weeks of vacation in her current role in Michigan as treasurer/finance director for the City of Village of Douglas, Mich.
Tien has served in her current position since July 2024. Prior to that, she was election coordinator/deputy clerk from August 2020 to June 2024 and as deputy county clerk of vital record from July 2016 to August 2020 for the city of Allegan, Mich; as a licensed insurance agent in both Michigan and Crestview, Fla. from Feb. 1998 to May 2007; as a customer service representative from January 1997 to January 1998 and as administrative assistant from June 1991 to January 1997. Tien earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Spring Arbor College in 1994.
Councilwoman Alicia Johnson made the motion which was seconded by seconded by Sandra McMurray Jackson. The motion carried.

-Approved to transfer $4,907.34 from Local Option Sales Tax (L.O.S.T.) funds to pay funding number Drinking Water 170311
-Approved to transfer $6,235.74 from L.O.S.T. funds to pay funding number Drinking Water 170310
-Approved to authorize the mayor to execute a contract with Plastic Art Signs as part of the parking lot renovation project and to continue discussions with the Escambia County Public Library System for potential cost-sharing, not to exceed $35,000 to be funded by American Rescue Plan Act funds
The next meeting will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 7, at Century Town Hall. The public is invited.
