Battery-operated jaws increases capibility
The Flomaton Fire Department recently added another piece of equipment to its ability to provide life-saving efforts with the addition of a battery-powered cutter that will be used to free people trapped inside vehicles following a crash.
The fire department recently purchased the $11,710 piece of equipment that was added to the budget by the Flomaton Town Council.
Jeremy Lee, Flomaton's lone paid fireman, said it's a great addition to the fire department, noting that the battery-powered 'jaws of life' are more reliable and enhances the fire department's ability to work quick to save lives.
Austin Pugh, a representative of T&T Rescue School, recently brought the new jaws to the fire department, which came from KLK Fire Solutions.
Lee and Fire Chief Steve Stanton said the jaws the fire department uses now are hydrophilic and depend on motors to run. The battery-powered device runs on its own.
"It's huge," Chief Stanton said. "It's faster, no hoses and we don't have to wonder about a motor cranking. Most fire departments are going to these battery-powered jaws and we are glad the council saw the need to put it in its budget.
