Solomon gives update on rebuilt road fund
The Escambia County (Ala.) Commission approved resolutions Monday re-electing Raymond Wiggins as its chairman and Larry White as its vice chairman for the next year.
The five-member commission is elected by districts but each year the board selects its full-time chairman and part-time vice chairman.
Also Monday, retired Brewton physician Dr. Jimmy Adkisson addressed the commission asking if the board had made any decisions on filling two vacancies on the Escambia County Healthcare Authority.
Wiggins noted there is vacancy in District 2, which he represents, and in District 5, which is represented by Karean Reynolds, but noted no decisions have been made. Wiggins did say the commission is working to fill the vacancies as soon as possible.
Dr. Adkisson also noted that Dr. Marsha Raulerson has assumed the duties of the county's medical examiner following the death of her husband, Dr. Dan Raulerson, who served in that capacity. Dr. Marsha Raulerson and Dr. Adkisson were serving as deputy medical examiners to fill in if Dr. Dan Raulerson was not available.
The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences will name the new medical examiner.
Commissioner White asked Dr. Adkisson about the county's Medical Society, which in the past made recommendations. The medical society was made up of physicians in the county but Dr. Adkisson there probably hasn't been a meeting in 20 years, but said it's still a functional board.
In other business Monday, the commission amended its budget to purchase two new transit vans for the Escambia County Alabama Transit System (ECATS). The purchase of the vans was not in the original budget, but the availability to purchase the two vans at a total cost of $194,000 with federal grant funds covering $174,600 of the cost and the county paying a $19,400 match prompted the commission to act.
The commission also:
- Heard from Assistant County Engineer Brad Solomon who gave an overview of the county's 2024 Rebuild Alabama projects. The report showed the county received $1.03 million through Rebuild Alabama and $400,000 in federal aid.
- Ratified the National Voting Rights Act agreement with the Alabama Secretary of State.
- Approved submission for ECATS federal grant.
- Approved the purchase of property located at 317 St. Nicholas Ave., in Brewton.
