Three qualify to fill Century council seat

At its Jan. 7 meeting, the Century Town Council named Councilwoman Alicia Johnson as interim mayor following the resignation of Mayor Luis Gomez, which created a vacancy in Johnson’s District 4 seat and three people have qualified to fill Johnson’s seat on the council.

Three Century residents have submitted their applications to be appointed to Johnson’s District 4 seat, which will be chosen from the current town council at the next council meeting, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m.

As of press time Tuesday afternoon, three candidates have submitted their applications for council seat no. 4. Those persons are: ‘Sparkie’ Harrison, Constance Brookhart and Kathryn Fleming.

Brookhart works as a supervisor at a water utility and has more than 20 years “dealing with people and finances”, according to her application.

Fleming works as a mental health case manager and describes Century as “a small town rich in history that tourists will want to stop in and check out”. She also served on the Charter Review Committee for Century.

Harrison serves as director at Pensacola State College Century Center and wrote on her application that she “would be honored to bring her skills, passion and dedication to the town council…. working for a brighter future for Century”.

A draft ordinance has been prepared to schedule and outline the requirements for a special election to fill the vacancies of mayor and council seat No. 4. The special primary election date will be Tuesday, March 18, 2025. The Special general election date is Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

The qualifying period for potential candidates is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday, Feb. 10 and Tuesday, Feb. 11 and from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025.

Voter registration deadlines are Feb. 19 for the primary and April 8 for the general election.

At its next meeting, the Century Town Council will look at approving the first reading of the ordinance authorizing a special election for the offie of mayor and council seat no. 4 and direct the town clerk to proceed with transmittal and necessary public notifications.
