'Tis the season for deer causing problems on road and more

Two hit in Flomaton; one jumps through window at Sandwich Deli

It's that time of year when female deer go in heat and male deer begin the chase and over the past few days two male deer have been hit by vehicles inside the Flomaton town limits and a female deer jumped through the front window of the Sandwich Deli in Century but was captured and released. Flomaton Fire Chief said this time of year it's extremely dangerous and motorists need to pay attention.

"You normally hear about people running into deer on rural roads, but we had two hit inside the town limits," Stanton said.

The first occurred last Thursday when a motorist hit a big cow-horned buck near the parking lot of the Tri-City Ledger. The deer, which was still alive, was dragged to the side of the road and the motorist left. Police were notified and arrived to see the deer suffering on the side of the road and made contact with Game Warden Adam Johnson who gave permission to shoot the deer to put it out of its misery.

Police officers helped Stanton load the deer onto his truck and the deer was donated to someone who wanted the meat.

Sunday morning about 9 a.m. Flomaton police were dispatched to near the intersection of Ringold Street and Highway 31 where a small male deer had apparently been hit by a vehicle the night before. The deer was standing in the road injured and again it was shot and the deer was donated to someone who wanted to have the meat.

Stanton said about 12:30 p.m. Sunday, he received a call from Paul Lassalua, owner of the Sandwich

Deli on Highway 29 in Century about a deer that had jumped through the front window and was still

inside the restaurant. Stanton said he and Lassaula entered the rear door of the building and saw the deer lying on the floor.

"We opened the front door and threw a blanket over her to calm her down," Stanton said. "Then she

took off and ran out the door into the woods."
